We've had a couple of people sign up to be a Mentor. We have Mentors with all types of backgrounds and collect data up front on the type of Mentee you are comfortable with. Please consider being a Mentor and signing up at www.womsa.org/mentors . The commitment is 1 hour per month for 6 months.

QUESTION: after finding and equitably recruiting talent from a diverse pool of candidates into your organizations, what are the internal initiatives you have in place to specifically support women and BIPOC (recognizing that different populations have different needs)?
Julie Spiller
01:14:16
Please share your job openings with WomSA. We will share with our network.

You do not have to be a woman to sign up to be a Mentee. We will help everyone. Our Mentors also help people advance in their cyber careers. Please sign up as a Mentee if you want to be paired up with a Mentor.

Please share this opportunity to be a Mentee or Mentor with your network. Let's get the word out together. WomSA has helped 51 Mentees since launching in June 2020. We have another 17 Mentees signed up for our next Mentorship program that launches late May.

As someone who has a social work background, what would your recommend as a first step into looking into a career change into this field?
Anthony Tuttle - Cyber Hub at WMCAT
01:54:40
There's an economic imperative to diversity as well...per "The Business Case for Racial Equity: A Strategy for Growth" (Michigan | 2018) by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the state of Michigan can realize a $92 billion gain in economic output by closing the racial equity gap
Diana Volere | SailPoint
01:54:52
That! Thank you Anthony.
Rebecca Harvey
01:55:45
Brittany, I’d say lots of skills from social work could carry over into certain Cybersecurity fields :). First step is to sign up as a Mentee at www.womsa.org. You will be assigned a Mentor who will help you with the roadmap that best suits your interests and skills
Aphrodite M Jones
01:57:07
Brittany - I completely agree with Rebecca and network with those in the field like you are now. It's a great community that has lots of free meetings and learning opportunities
Brittany Sinkler
01:57:17
Thank you!
Aphrodite M Jones
01:57:53
Also Brittany if you go out to WMCAT CyberHub they have some great self-paced learning no commitment free options
Anthony Tuttle - Cyber Hub at WMCAT
01:58:27
@Brittany - "Cybersecurity" isn't all technical, hands-on-keyboard stuff. To Tabice's point, learning how your existing skill set plugs into non-technical InfoSec roles is a great first step (before you start building new skills)

Good point Apple! WomSA and the WMCAT CyberHub both have different approaches for candidates at no cost
Aphrodite M Jones
02:01:50
@Brittany - I would also say there are a lot of areas for those of us with more soft skills than technical skills - I moved into the Awareness space myself
Rebecca Harvey
02:03:19
Lots of Psychology in Cybersecurity :)

I've heard from a number of local employers that much of the value in an undergraduate degree (regardless of the field) is that it serves as a proxy for your "soft/power" skills:works well with others, communicates well, knows how to learn, your "sticktoitiveness" to see the challenge through, etc.
cliff.burgess
02:07:08
Maybe but a lack of a degree shouldn't disqualify you from the opportunity.
Aphrodite M Jones
02:07:58
It's also important to understand that risk management, information security compliance and other areas need problem-solvers with less tech and great communication skills
Joanna Udo (Bridges in Tech)
02:08:01
@Anthony I truly believe that degree value to be true.
Brittany Sinkler
02:08:27
Thank you all I have a BSW but am looking to take my soft skills into this field. I appreciate the input.
Diana Volere | SailPoint
02:11:24
@Brittany I’d love to stay in touch and see you as a mentee in the next cohort of WomSA! Feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn, I’m the Director of Mentees for WomSA and can help you out in that process. :)
